Robotic Hip Replacement Q & A

What is a hip replacement?

Hip replacement is a surgical procedure which removes and replaces all the components of the hip joint that have been damaged by degenerative arthritis with a customized implant that mimics the form and function of your natural hip joint.

Specifically, Dr. Dalal implants a metal stem and an artificial ball to replace the damaged femoral head, or end of the thigh bone, and connects it to the top of the stem. He then fits the hip socket with a metal cup, which is lined with plastic. Dr. Dalal specializes in Mako™ Robotic-Arm Assisted total hip replacement (THR).

Who is a good candidate for hip replacement surgery?

Dr. Dalal does a careful evaluation before recommending hip placement. He’ll review X-rays and scans to determine the extent of bone, joint, and cartilage damage and to rule out other issues that may be causing your pain.

If you are generally in good health, and all other treatments have failed to lessen hip pain and loss of hip function like walking or putting weight on your hip, you may be a candidate.

There are a number of risk factors that could rule you out, including having:

  • An infection, or being at a high risk for infection
  • Significant thinning of the bones
  • A job in heavy manual labor, or being active in vigorous exercise or sports
  • Weight or obesity issues

What are the advantages of doing a robotic-assisted hip replacement?

Accuracy in the placement of the implant is the greatest advantage with robotic-assisted hip replacement. The robotic arm guides Dr. Dalal in preparing the socket in the pelvis and positions the implants optimally. With the benefit of real-time data and images, Dr. Dalal can accurately position the implant, which can be difficult to accomplish using traditional surgical techniques without a robotic arm.

Dr. Dalal is a pioneer in robotic-assisted total hip replacement surgery. With the support of St. Francis Hospital, he is responsible for bringing robotic MAKOplasty surgery for both the hip and knee to the Memphis area.

Patients come from all over the greater tri-state area to Tri-State Orthopaedics in Memphis and Germantown, Tennessee, because of Dr. Dalal's extensive experience in this advanced surgical technique. If you'd like to be evaluated for hip replacement, book your appointment online or call today.
