Shoulder Q & A

What are common shoulder issues?

As the joint in the human body with the greatest range of motion, it’s no wonder so many injuries and problems can occur to your shoulders.

Common shoulder issues fall into two categories: acute/sudden injuries, like accidents during a game, and overuse injuries. Overuse injuries happen over time through the constant repetition of movement or by trying to do too much activity before your body has prepared or built up to it.

Some of the most common shoulder conditions are:

  • Arthritis: Both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Frozen Shoulder: Inflammation that can result in limited mobility
  • Rotator Cuff Tear: Affects muscles or tendons
  • Shoulder Impingement: Painful inflammation of the rotator cuff
  • Shoulder Instability and Dislocation: A slipping or complete shoulder dislocation
  • Shoulder Tendonitis: Inflammation or tendon damage in the rotator cuff

How will my shoulder condition be diagnosed?

In addition to doing a thorough physical examination, Dr. Dalal uses scans and imaging data to see what’s going on. These tests can include:

  • An MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, which provides high-resolution images
  • A CT scanner, or computed tomography, which takes multiple X-rays for detailed images
  • Shoulder X-ray, which is useful for detecting a dislocation, osteoarthritis, or a fracture

How are shoulder issues treated?

Dr. Dalal customizes your treatment plan based on a variety of factors including:

  • How long you’ve had the injury
  • Your age and overall health
  • The severity, type, and location of the injury
  • Your lifestyle factors like your work, sports or activities

Like many conditions that affect tendons, joints, muscles, and bones, Dr. Dalal may create a treatment plan that combines treatments. Typical shoulder condition treatments can include

R-I-C-E (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) and physical therapy to strengthen shoulder muscles and improve mobility and function. Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications may also be prescribed.

In severe cases, Dr. Dalal may recommend shoulder surgery. Shoulder surgery can be done either as arthroscopic (several small incisions) or open (large incision).

Dr. Dalal and the highly skilled, caring medical staff at Tri-State Orthopaedics in Germantown and Memphis, Tennessee, are available to help you with your shoulder issues. Book your appointment online or call today.
